No. We offer tutoring services in support of homeschooling families in Maryland. We believe that parents are a child’s best teacher, and your status as homeschoolers will not change. As such, you are still responsible for locating a homeschool umbrella group, maintaining a portfolio, and meeting other state-mandated requirements. But we are here to help!

Tutorial programs will be offered in two- or four-day sessions (T/Th, W/F, or both) each week. Students must have at minimum two days of group lessons, and can also opt-in to attend an additional two days per week for independent tutoring/research support – to go even deeper into a project, topic, or subject.

On lesson days, students will explore diverse topics and work through the lens of Cosmic Curriculum, Junior Great Books, and Montessori math strands. They will write and create artifacts that demonstrate deep understanding. Lower Elementary students (K-3) will have group lessons on Tuesday and Thursday, and Upper Elementary (4-6) students will have group lessons on Wednesday and Friday.

Students must first sign up for and attend a session of group lesson days, and if they are so inclined, they can sign up as well for additional independent tutoring on the other two days that tutoring is offered. Independent tutoring consists of: custom/leveled lessons in math, writing, grammar, or spelling; support with student research projects, practice with handwriting and calligraphy, and much more!

In the state of Maryland, all children 5 years and older must be receiving “regular, thorough instruction” that is comparable to (or better than) a public school education available to children of similar age.

You remain in control of your child’s education, and continue to take responsibility for:

  • supplementing the instruction your child receives at BMCH,
  • maintaining a portfolio of work,
  • supervising instruction, and
  • providing regular thorough instruction in subjects not offered by BMCH

Great capacity comes from working together, and we rely on family participation to help our co-op run smoothly. Everyone has a say, and everyone pitches in! We host mandatory once-monthly parent meetings via zoom, and members help out in many other ways as well. Some of those ways include: assisting with preparing materials, chaperoning field trips, organizing classroom experiences and supplies, volunteering time and expertise to lead enriching activities, and more!

For the 2022-2023 school year, BMCH asks that parents fulfill 20 hours of volunteer service to the co-op per session per child enrolled. (Options are available to “buy out” volunteer service hours at the rate of $25/hr. if you are unable to meet this service requirement)

We are accepting applications for Fall 2022 on a rolling basis. If you’d like to learn more and/or set up a tour, click here. If you’re ready to apply, click here for the 2022-2023 Application.
